Can anyone be a better poet? Why is poetry so hard?!

Become a poetry geek: j.mp/poetryGeek (Subscribe link) In response to a comment on my video for the Golden Rule of becoming a better poet, one user, let's call 'em Jo(e), asked the age old question: "Why is writing poetry so F#*$@@#*& difficult?!" The truth is that beginning poetry is as easy as picking up a pen, but to improve takes practice. Wearing the right gear doesn't make you a marathone...

Free writing - How to write better poetry
Просмотров 13 тыс.8 лет назад
Become a poetry geek: j.mp/poetryGeek One of the easiest ways to generate ideas for your poetry is to write uninhibited and continuously. Not everything you write will be useful or good, but you can produce plenty of salvageable material and editing fodder. Free writing alone won't make you a better poet, but the practice of writing often and and editing often will. Some writers do publish thei...

Analysing Ali Cobby Eckermann's 'Untitled'

Become a poetry geek: j.mp/poetryGeek (subscribe link) A 10 minute video analysing an 18 word poem, in which I make the ironic observation that the thing that makes this poem so compelling is its brevity. Analysing Percy Shelley's 'Ozymandias' and Sylvia Plath's 'The Colossus'

Writing it as on 24 JAN 24' Im a 15 y/o 9th grader and i started Writing poems few months back and this is the first poem that I've written in the form of sonnet:) I was looking at the ceiling Pondering if i was healing Many storms came out of the blue And i was left having no clue Life is like hills and valleys for sure Its never going to smooth and pure In the road of life, much bends are there But we must mend our garden with love, sympathy and care In the tapestry of life There's a lot ups and downs But we should always have a smile on face just like a clown In the tapestry of life, there's much to endure There's alot ups and downs but It will take sometime to cure
Thank you for explaining the tips and informing us that you have eaten 😄
Sir tell us best book on poetry means tips to write poems

I want to write poetry but I fine it hard to write. What can I do?
I'm so happy I'm not Hemingway.
Interesting, I copied and pasted the article in order to re-read it quietly later. I saw that the English WP has a detailed article about Armitage, while the French seem to never have heard about him. Yet the few poems of him I read pleased me. Thanks for that discovery.
Maybe running or guitars arn't your thing either. Perhaps try a different hobby. 🤤🔊😤
Pretty sure I just streamed Sausage of Happiness 18 just last night.
You are a great teacher. Well explained .
Tanga is more fun to wright
Tanka (短歌), you mean?
Paperblanks ❤❤
So, what do you do when you write a poem and it naturally has heavy use of these devices? Should I change it so it is more focused, even if I don't think it sounds as good? (I love these three poetic devices and like the way they sound when I write them, but don't know if I'm overdoing it since it's throughout the poem. Therefore, calling attention to things I may not have intended.)
I can’t find the link that you refer to

So glad to stumble across this video. So very helpful. This is exactly what I have an incredible desire to learn more about and begin to incorporate into my writing craft. You mentioned this is your absolute favorite area of poetry, I'm hoping to find more of your videos on the same topics. It's always helpful to hear the same topic discussed in different ways. Seeing this video is 7 years old. Hope you're still posting. I'm your newest subscriber.
Thank you for your integrity and commitment to artistry and beauty rather than the almighty greed of commercial gain. Kudos and blessings!
Thank you ❤️
I'm not normally able to comment on YT, but this gives me an opportunity to share a Haiku that I've written recently. This is "Morning on Baker" The darkness recedes And a ray of sun hits peak A fish bites the bait
No title for a haiku.
This is such a great video thank you!
Good haiku is very hard to write. Most of the time people reduce this great poetic art to a number of syllables. This is how a good haiku should look: Unfolding a map the cherry petals connect Europe and Japan Eduard Țară (Romania)
True, that's a good one.
Haiku is not easy, at all.
I apreciate that you try to make new commers to poetry (or to writing in general) to not give up and try and try again till they succeed. I can confirm. My writing improve leagues upon leagues from I first start.
Well, to write is not hard. Be it poetry, prose... To write a masterpiece, now that's a difrent story.
Charge of the light brigade is dactylic meter: stressed, 2 unstressed which gives it the galloping feel. Anyway, proud to be a Victorian where a lot of these amazing horseman came from. BTW I have theory that the Man from Snowy River was an aboriginal, which explains his build and his lack of recognition. Back in the day, claiming that the best and most fearless horseman was aboriginal was a non starter.
I read today you video transcript today and like to tell you that whatever you explained coincidently match with my life experience.Great regards and thanks for such inspiring video. Long LIVE.
thnk you so so much
My singular complaint is that I am only now discovering your lovely, articulate and helpful channel! Thank you, sir!
"Sausage of happiness" is an incredibly moving image

CAn you give me list of poetry books that I can read
Nice

The notion that we should scrap random association as a means of metaphor discovery is nonsense. I have never tried it but will now, since this is a technique that engages the mind instead of sensoring it, and poets I know who do use it, do so with impressive results.
Please don’t apologise for the depth, length and complexity of your content! It is so GOOD to listen as you elucidate more advanced poetry techniques, and it’s super helpful for those of us who have been writing poetry for a while but still want to learn & open up new ground (which means sifting through 100s of articles full of “tips for beginner poets” just to find 1 with new & helpful info 😅). So thank you!
Thanks a lot for your videos! (Do you have a podcast too? It might make more sense than talking in front of the camera?)

Can you analyse the listeners by Walter de la Mare?
You're so good at explaining sir, thanks the knowledge
💌 I dared to eat anything ( edible ) with people around after listening to your sharings . I will "heck care "of what others think. I will just enjoy every bit of what I am eating no matter where I am . Thanks for " easing me off " about always being so "concerned "about what others are thinking of what I am doing. I will read up this poem , many many thanks 💝💝💝. 😋🍑🍑🍑😋. Have a happy day ahead 😘. ( 23.10.2022 )
